Celebrate Cuban jazz, New Orleans groove, and the release of Davisito Navarro’s debut album as a bandleader with a special birthday concert at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. The CubaNOLA Arts Collective alongside NOLAxNOLA present two stellar performances and an afterparty:

A rising star of the next generation of Cuban jazz musicians, David "Davisito" Navarro has performed with leading artists in Cuban music and salsa, including Emilio Morales, Bellita y su Jazztumbatá, El Niño y la Verdad, and José Alberto “El Canario.” Since moving to New Orleans in 2023, he has become a familiar presence on the city’s music scene, performing with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Charlie and The Tropicales, Mariachi Jalisco, Alexey Martí & AfroGumbo, and Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

Tonight, Davisito welcomes very special guest: 

Yissy Garcia is one of Cuba’s most exciting and innovative percussionists. Blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk, R&B, and electronica, she has shared the stage with artists including Dave Matthews, Esperanza Spalding, Allison Russell, Concha Buika, and Joshua Bell. Her performances have been featured at NPR’s Tiny Desk, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, SXSW, and other major stages around the country.

The evening also celebrates the release of Davisito + El Negro: Live from New Orleans, recorded live, right here at Snug Harbor on September 27, 2025. The album features 10 songs—including five original compositions and fresh interpretations of Cuban and New Orleans classics.

Will Bernard is an inventive, Grammy-nominated guitarist whose genre-bending career spans jazz, funk, hip-hop, world music, and experimental improvisation. He has performed and recorded with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dr. John, Tom Waits, Booker T. Jones, and George Porter Jr. His work with T.J. Kirk, featuring Charlie Hunter, earned a Grammy nomination.

A true New Orleans original, Donald Harrison is an internationally celebrated saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and cultural ambassador. A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Harrison has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Roy Haynes, Ron Carter, Terence Blanchard, and Dr. John. His signature “Nouveau Swing” blends jazz with the rhythms and spirit of New Orleans, funk, R&B, hip-hop, and African music.

Mike Clark is one of the most influential jazz-funk drummers of his generation, best known for his groundbreaking work with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. His playing on Hancock’s landmark Thrust, particularly “Actual Proof,” helped redefine jazz-funk drumming and influenced generations of musicians. Throughout his career, Clark has also performed and recorded with Chet Baker, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and John Scofield. His dynamic, groove-centered approach has made him a major force in jazz and funk.

New Orleans pianist Lawrence Sieberth is renowned for blending jazz with classical, world music, and contemporary influences. An acclaimed bandleader, producer and recording artist, Sieberth has worked with Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Charles Neville, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Germaine Bazzle, and Jason Marsalis.

This evening, Sieberth teams up with rising young keys player Sam Kuslan for a Happy Hour Set of dueling keys and voice.

Sam Kuslan is a New Orleans singer, pianist, arranger, and musical director known for his soulful voice, lush piano playing, and energetic stage presence. Inspired by the Great American Songbook and New Orleans., he blends jazz, pop, funk, and contemporary influences. Praised by OffBeat Magazine for his “New Orleans masters–style piano,” Kuslan has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, performing with Naughty Professor, Sean McConnell, and the National Park Service Centennial Band.

Celebrate the music and legacy of one of the most influential and innovative figures in jazz with a special birthday tribute to John Coltrane! 

Leading the performance is Derek Douget, a celebrated saxophonist whose music is deeply rooted in the rich, multicultural traditions of Louisiana. Raised in Gonzales, Douget began playing saxophone at age 10 and went on to be mentored by Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste. His career includes performances and recordings with Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, Ellis Marsalis, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Maurice Brown and more, including the Grammy-winning Book One.

This perfomance brings together 2 additional outstanding New Orleans based saxophonists—Ricardo Pascal, and Trevarri Huff-Boone—to honor Coltrane's enduring influence and extraordinary musical legacy. From Coltrane's groundbreaking work in bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz to his later explorations of spirituality and free improvisation, Coltrane continually expanded the possibilities of jazz and inspired generations of musicians.

Derek Douget, Ricardo Pascal, and Trevarri Huff-Boone each bring their own distinctive voices and perspectives to Coltrane's compositions, promising an evening of powerful melodies, deep grooves, adventurous improvisation, and the spirit of musical exploration that defined Coltrane's career.

Pianist Tom McDermott is St. Louis-born New Orleans transplant whose mastery spans ragtime, traditional jazz, Brazilian choros and funk. He brings his deep roots in the Crescent City's musical heritage and his ever-curious stylistic explorations. Tom blends tradition with innovation, offering a rich musical conversation that combines playful spontaneity and emotional depth. McDermott will be playing all original music.

This afternoon, Tom presents one of this acclaimed solo piano sets, where he'll play a selection of his own original compositions and arrangements. There's a chance he might sing too.

The Wildlife Band showcases the music of bassist, composer, and arranger Grayson Brockamp, whose repertoire spans Wayne Shorter to Eminem and Geri Allen to Busta Rhymes. Equally at home singing a traditional New Orleans tune or delivering a spoken-word poem about a feisty chihuahua, Brockamp explores the shared threads connecting blues, gospel, hip-hop, and other musical traditions.

New Orleans-bred saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and educator Victor Goines is one of the world's most respected voices in jazz. Notably, Victor performed in the Ellis Marsalis Quartet for a number of years beginning in the 1980s. Ellis later hired Victor as a faculty member when he created the University of New Orleans (UNO) Jazz Studies Department in 1989.  Goines is widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers and composers in music today. Drawing from his New Orleans roots, his extraordinary career includes performances throughout the world earning acclaim from audiences, critics and colleagues, including as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in NYC and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993. 

He has recorded and/or performed with many iconic jazz and popular artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Ruth Brown, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Dizzy Gillespie, Lenny Kravitz, Ellis Marsalis Jr, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Willie Nelson, Marcus Roberts, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and many more.

His discography boasts over 20 albums as a bandleader, and recordings on over 70 other releases, including Wynton Marsalis' Pulitzer Prize-winning recording, "Blood on the Fields" and Ted Nash's Grammy Award-winning "Presidential Suite."  A gifted composer, Goines has more than 100 original works to his credit, including his 1992 debut album "Genesis" on the late Harold Battiste Jr's seminal AFO Records. In 2000, he was commissioned by Juilliard's Dance Division to compose a musical work in celebration of their 50th Anniversary.

In recent years, he was selected to lead music and jazz departments at Juilliard NYC and Northwestern University in Chicago, and served as executive artistic director of Jazz St. Louis from 2022 - 2026.

Goines returns home to New Orleans this summer for a Monthly Residency at Snug Harbor.

GRAMMY Award-winning Louisiana musician, actor, author, and entrepreneur Chris Thomas King is a modern blues griot of our time. As the son of the famed late swamp blues artist and entrepreneur “Rockin” Tabby Thomas, Chris witnessed his father, a legendary Excello Records recording artist, start his own record label and open his own club, Tabby’s Blues Box in Baton Rouge, LA.

In addition to releasing over two dozen acclaimed records, Chris Thomas King has also appeared in more than a dozen films and television shows, including the award-winning Ray Charles biopic Ray and the hit HBO series Tremé, and most recently, published his first book, The Blues: The Authentic Narrative of My Music and Culture in 2021. Beyond his esteem as a traditional blues artist, Chris is also known as the pioneer of  rap-blues fusion, having produced the first known sample-based blues concept album entitled 21st Century Blues… from da Hood in the 1990s, and later creating his own record label under the same name.

Regarded as an Ambassador of 21st Century Cuban Music, guitarist, bassist, vocalist, composer and tres player, YUSA, is no stranger to New Orleans, as she has been spending time in the city and collaborating with many of our esteemed musicians since 2016 when she first performed with the Cuban band Telmary at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and officially made the Crescent City her home in 2019, after spending some time in Miami and Argentina.

YUSA is recognized as one of the leading voices of Cuban music today. Her compositions have earned the acclaim of both her contemporaries on the island and international admirers. Born in Havana, music and the ocean have been central to her artistic production as a singer-songwriter. 

She signed to the UK label Tumi Music in 2002 and released a handful of albums to critical acclaim, including multiple CubaDisco Awards and a BBC Radio World Music Award. In 2008, she founded her own label, Yusa Music, on which she released her 5th album in 2012. 

YUSA blazed trails in early years as a member of the all-women improvisational quintet Quasi Jazz, cementing her voice in the jazz fusion world, but she is perhaps most known as one of the core members of Quasi-Jazz to then go on and found the popular all-star Cuban timba-funk band Interactivo, serving as one its central composers.

She brings her vibrant blend of trova, son, pop, jazz, Cuban and Brasilian rhythms to the stage and leaves the audience always wanting more. Yusa draws the listener in with her uncommon and very personal style, integrating Cuban music with music from around the globe, avoiding clichés and achieving the ever-elusive “fusion.”

Monsieur Periné is a Bogotá-based musical ensemble from Colombia with an Afro-Colombian sound that mixes Latin and European flavors. Lead singer Catalina García sings in a mixture of Spanish, French, English, and Portuguese.

Over the last decade, the multilingual pop-jazz-swing band has been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, taking home 2 of those for Best New Artist (Caja de Música, 2015) and Best Alternative Music Album (Bolero Apocalíptico, 2023), not to mention numerous Latin Grammy nominations.

Their self-described style, "Suín a la Colombiana," is a rich blend of swing/jazz meets cumbia, bolero, danzón, bossa nova, salsa and tango that the Montreux Jazz Festival characterizes as a joyful, rockin' cosmopolitan sound.

Catalina García is a Colombian singer and actress, known as the vocalist and writer for the band Monsieur Periné. She was born in Cali, Colombia and attended the Paul Valery French high school in the same city. She moved to Bogotá and began studying Anthropology at Javeriana University.

While living in Bogotá, García met musicians Santiago Prieto, Nicolás Junca and Camilo Parra, with whom she began to play various genres of Latin American music and jazz, performing at various venues in the city. They took the name Monsieur Periné from the French word "perineum" (pelvic floor). In 2012 they released their first album called Hecho a Mano. The album turned out to be a commercial success, leading the group to perform throughout Latin America and at jazz festivals in Europe. Their second album, Caja de Música, was released in 2015 and produced by musician Eduardo Cabra (Calle 13). The album earned the group a Latin Grammy that same year in the "Best New Artist" category.

During the pandemic, in 2021, they achieved unprecedented global recognition when “Nuestra Canción” went viral, reaching #1 on both the TikTok U.S. Chart and the Spotify Global Viral Chart, accumulating more than 2 billion views and over 2 million uses in videos worldwide.

Monsieur Periné has also collaborated with modern Cuban soul-funk band Cimafunk -- who have been living part-time in New Orleans since 2023 -- on the percussive track "Catalina" (featuring Fux Beat), which was nominated for Record of the Year at the 2025 Latin Grammy Awards. The song is featured on Cimafunk's 2024 album, Pa' Tu Cuerpa., which was also nominated for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album of the Year at the US Grammy Awards the same year.

Following this bevy of international awards, Monsieur Periné has found themselves on grand stages such as Carnegie Hall, Montreux Jazz Festival - Miami, Montréal International Jazz Festival - Canada, Tecate P'al Norte Festival - Mexico, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Fusion Festival Berlin, and many more over the last two years.

Now, almost two decades after its founding, Monsieur Periné begins a new chapter with its upcoming album, Instrucciones Para Ser Feliz ("Instructions to Be Happy," expected on April 30, 2026), a project that reaffirms its ability to evolve and reinvent itself within contemporary Latin music and from which it has already released three singles: the controversial electronic guaracha “Aguaráchate”, the song “Grande” together with the collective Piso 21, and the hit “El Avión” in which, together with the legendary Carlos Vives, they raise their voices about the problems within migration.

Join Wendell Brunious and his Preservation Hall Legacy Band for an afternoon of Traditional New Orleans Music.

Trumpeter and vocalist Wendell Brunious boasts a towering musical family tree primarily flowered with trumpets. He is the son of trumpet master John “Picket” (or “Picky”) Brunious Sr. and Nazimova “Chinee” Santiago, the niece of guitarist/banjoist Willie Santiago.

Brunious believes what’s considered the “Brunious sound” all began with his father’s influence. “When my father first started to develop as a trumpet player was in an era before amplification, so you had to play loud enough to hear yourself and to be heard in the band. I kind of think that’s where what some people call the Brunious sound kind of started. That ‘sound’ is being able to interpret ballads when you are also trying to hear the actual words coming out of the end of the trumpet. What was important was the tone, playing in tune, and being able to play nice ballads—not just fast stuff. Branden Lewis was raised playing trumpet: in church, in his school marching bands, and one of the top youth orchestras in Los Angeles. “I have music in my heart and soul. I never planned on playing music for a living – I just always loved playing the trumpet.” His grandfather James Victor Lewis is a Grammy award-winning saxophone player, famous for his role in one of New Orleans’ most iconic early R&B bands, Lil Millet and His Creoles. “He moved to Los Angeles around 1960 in an attempt to escape some of the bitter realities of being a Black man in Louisiana at that time. Even though I grew up in Los Angeles, Grandpa never let us forget that we were from New Orleans.”

In 2012 Branden moved to New Orleans to discover a career as a full-time musician, and was immediately taken under the wing of Delfeayo Marsalis, performing with him at Frenchmen Street’s “modern jazz proving ground” – Snug Harbor. Since recording on Bobby Rush’s 2014 Grammy-nominated record with Dr. John, "Decisions," co-founding the international Trumpet Mafia collective with Ashlin Parker, touring with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra; recording his first album as a bandleader – "BLQ" – and joining the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in 2016, he has collaborated and performed alongside Stevie Wonder, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Arcade Fire, Chance the Rapper, Jon Batiste, Reggie Watts, Dave Matthews, Corinne Bailey Rae, Foo Fighters and many more.

Born in 1958, trumpeter Leroy Jones was raised in New Orleans’s Seventh Ward. He started playing cornet at St. Leo the Great Elementary School and soon got a trumpet. When he was twelve, his neighbor Danny Barker heard him practicing and recruited him for the Fairview Baptist Church Band, which Jones later led. Sometimes after finishing Fairview gigs in the French Quarter, Jones and his bandmates would stop by Preservation Hall to listen.

Jones went on to play with Harry Connick Jr. and His Orchestra and become a member of the New Orleans Jazz Hall of Fame. Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard remembers growing up around Jones: “He was the guy that was well ahead of his time. He played with a command and maturity that is still unmatched. When I listened to him play I always imagined myself having that tone, or his sense of phrasing, and definitely his sense of rhythm. He was and still is my hero.” These days, when he’s not on tour, Jones leads his own band at the Hall each week, delighting audiences with his impeccable technique, modern swing, and warm, gentle voice. He is married to Hall trombonist Katja Toivola.

Monumental Change: Memory, Civic Healing and Public Imagination is a one-day symposium that brings together artists, scholars, activists, and community leaders to explore how creative expression shapes our collective memory and our vision for the future.

Inspired by the historic removal of Confederate monuments in New Orleans and Richmond (Virginia), the program features thought-provoking conversations, interactive workshops, live music, poetry, and artistic performances that examine these two cities’ shared history and processes of civic healing.

Hosted by the Shockoe Institute and Jazz Generations Initiative New Orleans with support from Xavier University of Louisiana, this unique gathering invites all who are invested in building a more equitable future to engage in dialogue, reflection, and collective imagination.

Monumental Change will feature artists, scholars and change makers — discussing questions surrounding what it means to monumentalize our collective history, how we reckon with the past and what it can mean for the future — each from their own perspectives.

Kid Merv & All That Jazz is a renowned New Orleans band led by trumpeter and vocalist Mervin Campbell. Known for his traditional jazz, brass, and funk performances, Campbell heavily emulates the classic styles of two of his largest influences, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima. Mervin "Kid Merv" Campbell is a deeply rooted New Orleans musician. His career began in his youth, playing trumpet in the famous St. Augustine High School Marching 100 and the legendary Olympia Brass Band. He went on to form The Young Olympians, which ultimately morphed into the now globally recognized Soul Rebels Brass Band, aka now The Soul Rebels. Over his career, he has also played with notable groups like the Treme Brass Band, the Louis Armstrong Society Band, and the Original Royal Players Brass Band. Kid Merv & All That Jazz are a staple on the local festival circuit, performing regularly at major events like the French Quarter Festival, Satchmo SummerFest, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, among many others.

Critically acclaimed and community celebrated, John Coltrane, influenced the saxophone music family throughout and after his life. He is known for connecting with his listeners through rich, smooth and spiritually played jazz. Inspired by the melodies of Johnny Hodges and Dexter Gordon, Coltrane further honed his natural, self-taught, skills by playing in Miles Davis’s band from 1955 to 1959. As excellently put in Coltrane 100’s biography, “…their relationship remains one of the most fruitful and significant in jazz history” (Coltrane 100, 2026). As a performance and recording artist, Coltrane was able to satisfy the creative freedom shown to him by Davis and balance the output of his musicality “…fiery, live recordings… [and] softer, more meditative [studio recordings]” (Coltrane 100, 2026).  

John Coltrane is a musician of reference for jazz students worldwide and for that reason the Congo Square Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to him through their concert in our third-floor Performance Center. There is no admission fee, and everyone is welcome!

The Jazz Foundation of America presents a Happy Hour Set with BrasiNola ...

BrasiNola is a New Orleans-based musical group that blends 1970s and 1980s Brazilian tropicália, samba, and funk with deep New Orleans second-line rhythms for a mix of samba, folk, psychedelia, and jazz-funk. Co-founded by bassist Ron Johnson, the band features local players performing classic Brazilian tracks with a heavy NOLA groove.

The band draws on the late 1960s and 1970s heyday of that Brazilian sound while grounding everything in the feel of the city where they perform. As bassist and co-founder Ron Johnson puts  it, "the NOLA in our name is the foot of the New Orleans drummer."

Vocalist Kim Prevost and guitarist Bill Solley have captivated audiences since winning the 1999 “BET on Jazz” Vocal Discovery Award. Their remarkable chemistry has earned widespread acclaim, with JazzTimes comparing their effortless musical connection to the legendary Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald, while noting their distinctive modernist approach. Over the years, Prevost and Solley have performed and collaborated with acclaimed artists including Arturo Sandoval, Bobby McFerrin, and Nine Inch Nails.

Amina Figarova is an Azerbaijani-born pianist, composer, and bandleader celebrated for her sophisticated jazz compositions and expressive playing. She has built an acclaimed career blending post-bop, contemporary jazz, and global influences and has released numerous albums—including Twelve and Blue Whispers. A frequent collaborator with her husband, flutist Bart Platteau, as well as renowned artists Rudy Royston, Luques Curtis, Wayne Escoffery, and Alex Norris, Figarova is known for her intricate arrangements and dynamic ensemble interplay.

Joshua Starkman is a New Orleans–based guitarist, bandleader, and social media influencer known for his versatile style rooted in jazz, funk, and rock. An active presence in the city, he has performed with a wide range of artists and at renowned venues, earning a reputation for both musicianship and collaboration. He is also the creator of the popular “Have a Great Day” series, where he shares uplifting guitar performances and positive messages, building a global following through his blend of music, humor, and optimism.

Clint Maedgen is a New Orleans artist and musician known for his work with Liquidrone, the New Orleans Bingo! Show, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. A versatile vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Maedgen draws from blues, country, rock, folk, and gospel to create a distinctive sound rooted in New Orleans’ rich musical tradition. His latest project, Clint Maedgen and the BandaPandas, grew out of his global Patreon community, The Panda Family, formed during the pandemic to connect musicians and fans through performances and conversations.

The two join forces this evening for a very special FREE happy hour performance.

Mahmoud “Mood” Chouki is a Moroccan master guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator currently living and working in New Orleans since 2019. His art draws together music from around the globe, exploring how music may speak across cultural divides.

In addition to training and performing with conservatories around the world, Chouki also teaches music at the Lycée Français de la Nouvelle Orléans and is ta music curator for monthly programs at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Most recently, he composed the music score for the 2021 Sundance Award winning film, “Ma Belle, Ma Beauty,” directed by New Orleans based filmmaker, Marion Hill. Also in 2021, Chouki was awarded 2020’s “Best Emerging Artist” by OffBeat Magazine’s annual Best of the Beat Awards. His New World Ensemble has been steadily wow'ing audiences for the past year, growing with acclaim, and earning him Gambit Weekly's 2022 "Best World Music Artist" Award at their annual Big Easy Awards.

He released his debut US album "Mood 's Blues" in 2023, and is preparing for his sophomore local record release in 2026 on the New Orleans Jazz Museum's Gallatin Street Records imprint. His expertise in a variety of handheld string instruments has also led to Mood becoming a core artist with the annual Danny Barker Banjo, Guitar & Cigar Box Guitar Festival.

Hailing originally from Baton,Rouge, Louisiana, BC Coogan is a versatile keyboardist and vocalist known for playing in a wide variety of contexts, styles and projects from from jazz to funk to rock. Perhaps most known as a touring member of bands with NYC's John Ellis and Galactic's Stanton Moore, as well as popular New Orleans bands Bonerama, Good Enough For Good Times, and Big Sam's Funky Nation, he's also found regularly playing with experimental New Orleans musicians like Johnny Vidacovich, Mike Dillon, Alex McMurray, Khris Royal, and longtime collaborator Simon Lott. Coogan was also a band member and collaborator on electro project Pretty Lights' Grammy-nominated 2013 - 2016 run.

But on Monday nights at the Saturn Bar along New Orleans' St. Claude Avenue DIY arts strip, Coogan has been serving up a solo piano & a microphone weekly residency for several years now that has become quite a staple, establishing him as a solo artist more than ever before, in a city with a long, long line of piano & voice tradition.

A chill, come as you are way to start the week in this dive bar turned indie corner haunt, and be home by midnight.
